About
The SHGCC summer swim team is rich with history and success. In the fifty plus years the club has seen countless high school and college swimmers begin their careers at SHGCC. What has been the secret to our success? It all lies within a strong commitment from GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS, and of course the SWIMMERS! Our team’s strength comes not just from practice in the water but from taking part in all of the social activities our program has to offer.
The swimmers role is to attend as many practices and social activities that they can. Practices will consist of drill-based sets that improve swim and racing skills. Swimming drills are designed to break the stroke down into individual components so that the swimmer will learn how to be more efficient in the water. All swimmers will train all four strokes for the swimmers benefit. The coaches at SHGCC do not believe in promoting a specialty stroke in the developmental stages of swimming.
The social activities that we offer are just as important if not more important as practice. Not only are they fun and help encourage the swimmer to the pool but they help build team moral and memories that last a lifetime. As a competitive swimmer myself, the fond memories I had at the pool during summer was what got me through the stressful times in my athletic career. Summer league swimming is the only sport where you have all ages of swimmers from five to eighteen working together as a team on a daily basis and competing with one another on a weekly basis. This relationship is what helped me gain confidence as a child and taught me maturity in my teens. These activities are truly what distinguish the SHGCC swim team from the other programs.
The parent’s role during the season is tremendously important. The meets are run by the parents, whether it is volunteering as a timer, drink server, or bigger roles like meet director and IT personnel. Without your help we could not run a meet. We are fortunate to have Lisa Gani as our parent coordinator. If you have any question regarding volunteering please don’t hesitate to contact either of us.
During summer the Team participate in five dual meets. Please take a look at our schedule. Dual meets are on Sunday mornings beginning at 9am and usually finish around 1:30pm. It is the parent’s responsibility to sign up each swimmer in the family by the Friday before the meet to guarantee entry. The first season and the first few meets for a new family can always be confusing, a little chaotic, and at times stressful. My golden rule during a swim meet whether a parent or swimmer is to walk slowly, make new friends, take a deep breath and always ask your coaches for help!
